This study investigates the impact of utilizing summarizing strategies on reading comprehension skills among secondary school students. Through a quasi-experimental design, forty second-year high school students were selected as the treatment group at Al-Fatima Al-Zahraa Secondary School for Girls during the academic year 2022/2023. The study objectives encompassed assessing the effectiveness of the summarizing strategy, identifying its influence on information condensation and main idea extraction, and exploring its benefits and challenges in an educational setting.
Following 11 training sessions on summarization strategies, significant improvements were observed in students' ability to simplify texts, understand complex materials, and extract main ideas. Moreover, the summarizing strategy intervention demonstrated a large effect size (η² = 0.852), significantly enhancing students' reading comprehension abilities. Subsequent to the intervention, participants also reported improvements in expressing ideas clearly and confidently comprehending information, indicating the intervention's substantial impact on enhancing reading comprehension skills
Reading is a fundamental skill that students must acquire, particularly in English, as it is crucial for comprehension. Students need to develop the ability to understand the content of what they read in order to acquire knowledge and information effectively.
